BERNARD, Albert H Bert went to PNG as a Senior Technician with Posts and Telegraphs and served in Port Moresby, Wewak and Madang where he was for some 10 years. Bert is survived by his widow, and daughter.
Richard was born at Grafton, NSW, on 14 March 1938 and was educated at Woodlawn College at Lismore. He went to PNG as a Cadet Patrol Officer in 1959 and served as a CPO, ADO and District Officer in various districts including Milne Bay, Wonenara, Goroka, Mount Hagen, Kagua, Mendi, Saidor and Madang. Richard left PNG from Madang in 1975 and settled at Nambour on the Sunshine Coast. In 1983 he returned to Goroka and was a Factory Manager for Busu Coffee until 1987. In 1987/88 he was General Manager for National Plantations Management Agency in Goroka. In 1989 he took a position with the Department of Aboriginal affairs in Alice Springs but eight days after his arrival there he died. Richard leaves a wife, Barbara, who before her marriage was a Nursing Sister at Goroka, and three daughters, Sara, Victoria and Rebecca.
Ernie was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on 7 February 1912 and came to Australia in 1947. He went to Madang in 1949 and subsequently joined Government Stores serving in Madang and Mount Hagen. He married in 1971, becoming as he used to say "an instant grandfather to nine grandchildren". He retired soon after and returned with his wife Joan to Australia. Joan and Ernie travelled extensively in their retirement, returning twice to Belfast. Ernie's friends will remember him for his assistance over many years in his Government Stores role, for his sense of humour, and for his unfailing friendship. One of Ernie's legacies is a significant collection of photographic transparencies taken in PNG. These are meticulously catalogued and stored and his friend Laurie Le Fevre is hoping that they will find a way into the collection of one of the universities. Laurie is currently making arrangements for this with Ernie's widow, Joan.
Betty went to Port Moresby from Western Australia in 1948 as a Dental Technician with the Public Health Department. She later met and married Carl Mayoh who was with DASF. Betty and Carl in 1962 moved to a plantation 'Bisi' in the Sangara Soldier Settlement Scheme at Popondetta, where Carl became a prominent planter in the area. They left PNG in 1982 and settled on a property 'Bisi Two' at Gympie, Qld, where they resided until recently. Betty is survived by her husband Carl, daughters Rhonda and Claire and son Peter.
Hilma, who was born in 1915, went to Madang in the mid-fifties and worked there in Government Stores until retirement to Brisbane in the early seventies. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs Lyle Hooper of Mooloolaba, Qld.
Radio technician in Rabaul, Madang and Mount Hagen in the 50s and early 60s. Retired from PNG late 60s and settled at Margate in Queensland. No further information available.
Doreen developed the system of pre-schools throughout PNG during the many years she worked for the Public Health Department. During retirement she lived for a time in both Australia and New Zealand. No further information available.
Leonard joined the Royal Papua and New Guinea Constabulary in 1947 and was posted to Lae. Subsequently he served in Rabaul, Manus, Port Moresby, and retired to WA in 1965. He served as a Traffic Inspector for a number of years in Greenbushes and then Kalamunda where he lived. He is survived by widow May, sons Clive and Barry and daughter Susann.
