Maprik had a fine and capacious sub-district office which featured carved house posts from the River and large facade panels with Maprik motifs painted by a once-resident kiap, Nigel van Ruth. The barrister, just about to go in to bat for a defendant, is John O'Meally, a friend from the year dot who later took up an appointment on the PNG National Court bench. These days he is President of the NSW Dust Diseases Tribunal.
